Skin warts on the neck: what to know

Warts are viral skin growths that may feel rough and stand above the surface. On the neck, collars, chains, hair, and shaving can rub the lesion, causing soreness or small breaks in the skin. A smooth, soft, hanging bump may instead be a skin tag, while a pigmented or changing spot may need a different assessment. The appearance and texture alone cannot establish the diagnosis.

Keep the area clean and avoid picking, tying thread around the bump, or shaving directly across it. Use separate towels and razors, and wash hands after contact. A clinician may recommend observation or discuss imiquimod, cryotherapy, electrosurgery, or wart removal. The choice considers whether the growth is broad or narrow, how easily it is irritated, and whether treatment could leave a change in colour or texture.

Book a prompt assessment for bleeding, crusting, an open sore, rapid change, persistent pain, or a lesion that repeatedly catches on clothing. Get advice if redness spreads, swelling becomes marked, or drainage follows an attempted removal. A wart-like growth that does not settle after treatment should be rechecked rather than repeatedly treated at home.
