What should you know about skin thrush treatment?

Thrush is an overgrowth of Candida yeast. Genital thrush commonly causes itching, soreness, redness, burning, and a thick or unusual discharge. Similar symptoms can come from bacterial vaginosis, irritation, or a sexually transmitted infection, so symptoms alone do not prove thrush.

Treatment may be applied locally as a cream or pessary, or taken by mouth when suitable. Clotrimazole is one local antifungal option; fluconazole is an oral option that is not appropriate for everyone. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver problems, medicine interactions, and recurrent symptoms affect the choice.

Use the medicine exactly as directed and complete the recommended course, even if itching eases sooner. Avoid perfumed washes, douching, and tight, damp clothing; wash gently and dry the area carefully. Some creams and pessaries can weaken latex condoms or diaphragms, so check the product instructions and use alternative protection when advised.

If this is your first episode, symptoms keep returning, or treatment does not help, arrange an assessment rather than repeatedly self-treating. Vaginal discharge and vaginal itching can be assessed as part of that review.

Seek medical advice for fever, pelvic or lower abdominal pain, sores, blisters, bleeding, foul-smelling discharge, pregnancy, or symptoms after possible sexual exposure. Get urgent help for severe pain, fainting, or feeling acutely unwell. Persistent or recurrent symptoms need a clinician to check the diagnosis and consider other causes.
