Why is my skin tag white?

Skin tags are often flesh-coloured or a little darker, so a white appearance can follow rubbing, pressure, surface dryness, or twisting of a tag on its stalk. A tag with reduced blood flow may become pale, then darker, and can feel tender as it dries. Flaky material on the surface may also make the growth look lighter.

Colour alone cannot confirm what a growth is. A firm white bump, a scaly patch, a lesion with an irregular edge, or a spot that continues to change may be another skin condition. A clinician can inspect it with appropriate lighting and decide whether further evaluation is needed.

Avoid picking or scraping the pale surface, and reduce rubbing from clothing, jewellery, or skin folds. Take a clear photograph for comparison if the appearance is changing, but do not use acids, freezing kits, or string at home. These products can injure normal skin and make assessment harder.
