What tying string does
A tight thread or string may press on the stalk of a skin tag and reduce its blood flow. The area can become swollen, tender, dark, or irritated, and the material can rub into the skin. It does not confirm that the growth is a skin tag.
A lesion that resembles a tag may be a different condition requiring another evaluation. Tying it can also create a wound that is difficult to keep clean, especially in a skin fold.
