What should you know about a skin tag hanging off?

Skin tags are soft growths that may attach to the skin by a narrow stalk. When the stalk is pulled or twisted, the tag can become sore, swollen or darker. A dangling appearance alone does not confirm the diagnosis, particularly if the surface is rough, the colour is uneven or the lesion has changed.

Keep the area clean and reduce rubbing from collars, necklaces, underwear or towels. Do not pull it off, tie it with thread or apply household chemicals. If it repeatedly catches or interferes with daily activities, a dermatologist can confirm what it is and discuss skin tag removal, cryotherapy or electrosurgery.

Arrange prompt care if the tag bleeds repeatedly, becomes very painful, develops pus, is surrounded by spreading redness or changes quickly. A lesion that turns very dark or forms an open sore should be assessed rather than treated at home. Apply gentle pressure to minor bleeding while arranging advice.

Ask whether the stalk and surface look typical, whether removal is advisable, and how to care for the site afterward. Tell the clinician if it has twisted, snagged or bled, and mention medicines that affect bleeding.
