What should you know about a skin tag growing back?

After removal, a small portion of the original lesion can remain and become noticeable again. Friction can also create a separate tag close to the treated spot, especially where skin rubs against skin or clothing. A changing bump should not automatically be assumed to be a skin tag; a clinician can inspect its shape, surface, colour and attachment.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the growth is enlarging, catching on clothing or returning after more than one removal. Do not cut, tie or burn it at home, since bleeding, infection and an incorrect diagnosis are possible. A clinician may discuss options such as cryotherapy, electrosurgery or another removal method after examining the area.

Seek prompt medical attention for persistent bleeding, marked tenderness, pus, spreading redness, rapid change, ulceration or a darkening lesion. These features need assessment rather than repeated self-treatment. If bleeding does not settle with gentle pressure, use urgent care.
