Can shaving cause a skin tag?

A skin tag is a soft growth that may hang from the skin. A razor can catch its stalk, causing tenderness, a small cut, or temporary bleeding. Shaving can also inflame a hair follicle, producing a red, sore bump that may contain an ingrown hair.

These problems can look similar in a mirror. A tag often remains soft and attached, while follicle irritation tends to sit around a hair and may settle as the skin recovers. A hard, dark, rapidly changing, or repeatedly bleeding lesion should not be assumed to be shaving irritation.

Pause shaving over a painful or bleeding bump. Rinse gently, apply light pressure to a small cut, and avoid picking the area. Use a clean razor, shaving gel, and light strokes when you resume; do not deliberately shave across a protruding growth.
