Skin tag on the buttocks: what to know

Buttock skin is exposed to sitting pressure, seams, sweat, and repeated rubbing. A skin tag may therefore become itchy, chafed, or tender even when it began as a quiet, soft growth. Other lesions, including cysts, warts, moles, and inflamed areas, can look similar. A clinician can distinguish these possibilities by examining the surface and attachment.

Clean the area gently, dry it carefully, and reduce pressure or rubbing with comfortable clothing. Do not pull, cut, or tie the growth. If it interferes with sitting, exercise, or hygiene, a dermatologist can discuss clinician-performed cryotherapy, electrosurgery, or skin tag removal after confirming the diagnosis.

Arrange a review for a lesion that enlarges, hardens, changes colour, bleeds repeatedly, or develops a lasting ulcer. Prompt care is needed for pus, spreading redness, increasing warmth, fever, or severe pain. A lump close to the anus, especially one that is new or difficult to identify, should not be treated based on appearance alone.

Ask how the clinician identified it, whether removal would improve comfort, how the wound should be protected from sitting and friction, and what changes should trigger follow-up.
