What should you know about skin tag bands?

A band placed around the narrow base of a true skin tag can reduce its blood supply, causing the tissue to dry and separate over time. That mechanism is unsuitable for every bump: a mole, wart, cyst, inflamed lesion, or growth with a broad base may react unpredictably. Bands can also cause pain, bleeding, skin injury, or infection if they are too tight, placed on irritated skin, or used in the wrong location.

Have the growth checked before applying a band, especially if it is dark, firm, bleeding, sore, or changing. Never use a band near the eye, inside the mouth, on genital or anal skin, or over broken skin unless a clinician specifically directs you.
