What should you know about skin syringoma?

Syringomas usually appear as grouped, firm, skin-coloured, yellowish, or slightly brown bumps. They commonly affect the lower eyelids but may occur on the upper eyelids, cheeks, forehead, chest, or other areas. They are generally not contagious and are not caused by poor hygiene. Most do not hurt, although heat, sweating, or rubbing may make them more noticeable. Several other conditions can look like tiny facial bumps, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. A dermatologist may inspect the area closely and occasionally recommend a small biopsy when the pattern is unusual.

Avoid squeezing, scraping, or using wart or spot-removal products near the eyes. Gentle cleansing and sun protection can reduce irritation and help limit darkening after inflammation. If the bumps are stable and do not bother you, observation is reasonable. When appearance or repeated irritation is a concern, a dermatologist can discuss options such as CO2 laser resurfacing or electrosurgery. Treatment may require careful technique around delicate eyelid skin, and pigment change, scarring, or recurrence can occur. The safest choice depends on the diagnosis, skin tone, location, and number of lesions.

Book an assessment if a bump grows quickly, bleeds, crusts, changes colour, becomes painful, affects vision, or differs from the others. Prompt review is also sensible when a lesion appears suddenly or when you are unsure whether it is a syringoma. Do not self-treat lesions close to the eye.
