Skin sun damage and white spots: what to know

Lighter marks can become more visible when surrounding skin tans. Possible explanations include reduced pigment after inflammation, a superficial fungal rash, or a pigment condition unrelated to sun damage. Texture, scale, itch, distribution, and the speed of change help a clinician narrow the possibilities. A photograph can show location, but it cannot reliably distinguish these causes or replace an examination.

Use shade, protective clothing, and sunscreen on both the spots and nearby skin to reduce contrast and prevent further ultraviolet exposure. Wash gently and avoid bleaching agents, harsh scrubs, and unprescribed steroid mixtures. Note when the marks began, whether they are scaly or itchy, and whether new areas are appearing. Treatment depends on the diagnosis; options for an associated inflammatory or acne-like problem are different from care for a pigment disorder.

Book a skin assessment if the spots spread, recur, become scaly, or remain unexplained. Seek prompt care for pain, bleeding, crusting, a rapidly changing mark, marked redness, or involvement of the eyes or mouth. A clinician should also review widespread changes or spots that began after a new medicine, because the right treatment depends on the underlying process.

Ask whether the marks show pigment loss, surface scale, or a change after inflammation; whether any test is needed; and which products are safe for your skin tone. Discuss sun protection, expected colour recovery, and what change should trigger a follow-up visit.
