What should you know about skin substitute graft?

The material may cover a burn, ulcer, surgical wound, or area where tissue has been lost. Depending on the product, it can act as a temporary protective layer or provide a scaffold while the body repairs the wound. It may not behave like a permanent replacement for a person’s own skin. The treating team chooses material according to wound depth, moisture, infection risk, blood supply, and the amount of tissue available around it.

Follow dressing instructions closely and keep the treated area protected from friction, soaking, and unapproved products. Attend wound checks so the team can assess attachment, drainage, and new tissue. Tell the clinician about diabetes, poor circulation, immune problems, smoking, allergies, and medicines that affect healing. Once the wound is closed, sun protection and gentle moisturising may help the new surface settle. Fractional laser treatment may be discussed later for selected texture or scar concerns, after healing is complete.

Call the wound team if the dressing becomes soaked, the substitute lifts, pain suddenly worsens, or the surrounding skin becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, or foul-smelling. Fever, pus, spreading redness, blackening tissue, or a sudden loss of sensation needs prompt medical assessment. Do not remove a secured dressing or apply antiseptic, antibiotic, or herbal products unless the treating team directs you.

Ask what material is planned, whether it is temporary, how often dressings will change, how movement will be protected, what healing milestones to expect, and which symptoms mean the graft needs urgent review.
