Skin Pigmentation on the Back

Flat brown or grey marks may remain after a spot, ingrown hair, or inflamed follicle settles. Sweat, tight clothing, backpack straps, and repeated rubbing can keep the area irritated. Acne and folliculitis may leave colour behind even after active bumps improve. Less commonly, a changing patch may need a closer examination rather than being assumed to be a post-spot mark.

Wash after sweating, choose breathable clothing, and avoid scrubbing or squeezing lesions. Use a non-comedogenic moisturiser and protect exposed areas from sunlight. Treating active pimples or follicle inflammation helps reduce new marks; a dermatologist can recommend suitable topical treatment and, in selected cases, LED light therapy. Do not apply strong acids or steroid creams to a large area without advice.

Arrange a review for painful deep bumps, pus, spreading redness, repeated outbreaks, or marks that develop without a preceding spot. Seek prompt assessment for a patch that changes quickly, bleeds, forms a persistent sore, or has a markedly different border or colour. A clinician can examine hard-to-see areas and separate acne-related pigmentation from other causes.
