What should you know about skin hot and red?

Brief flushing can follow heat, exercise, emotion or spicy food. A lasting patch may reflect sunburn, heat rash, contact dermatitis, rosacea or psoriasis, each with different triggers and surface changes.

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of deeper skin and often causes warmth, tenderness and expanding redness. The symptom does not identify one diagnosis by itself; location, speed of change, pain, fever and skin texture help guide assessment.

Move away from heat, gently cool the area with a clean cool cloth, and avoid scratching, harsh products and tight clothing. Note the border of redness and whether it expands; do not apply leftover antibiotics or steroid creams without advice.
