What should you know about skin after stitches are removed?

Removal means the closure material has been taken out; it does not mean the deeper tissues have finished healing. A healing line can feel tight or numb and may look pink, raised or darker than nearby skin. Mild sensitivity can continue as the scar matures. The appearance depends on the wound location, depth, movement and your skin type.

Follow the wound-care instructions you were given. Keep the area clean, pat it dry and avoid picking a scab or pulling at the edges. Protect the line from rubbing and from stretching during activity until a clinician says normal movement is suitable. Once the skin has fully closed, ask whether moisturising or scar protection is appropriate. Use sun protection over healed skin because sunlight can make a new scar more noticeable.

Contact a clinician promptly if the wound edges separate, bleeding does not stop with gentle pressure, pain is increasing, redness spreads, swelling worsens, pus appears or you develop fever. Urgent help is needed for heavy bleeding, severe pain, rapidly spreading redness or feeling seriously unwell.

Ask when bathing, exercise, work and dressing changes are safe for your wound. You can also ask how to recognise infection, whether the scar needs follow-up, and when the wound can be exposed to sun or covered with a scar product.
