What should you know about single folliculitis?

A follicle can become irritated by shaving, friction, sweat, tight clothing, or repeated touching. Bacteria or yeast may also contribute. The area may develop a tiny pustule, crust, itch, or soreness, and an ingrown hair can create a similar bump. Folliculitis can occur on the scalp, face, neck, chest, back, buttocks, or thighs, so location and recent activities help guide assessment.

Clean the area gently and keep it dry. Pause shaving, waxing, and friction over the spot while it is irritated; do not squeeze, pierce, or scratch it. Wear loose, breathable clothing where practical and use a clean towel. A warm, moist compress may soothe tenderness. Avoid sharing razors or towels. A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy or antibiotics for skin infection when the pattern suggests bacterial involvement, but do not use leftover medicine.

Seek prompt care if redness spreads, pain increases, pus accumulates, several bumps appear, or fever develops. Urgent help is appropriate for rapidly worsening swelling, red streaks, severe illness, or involvement near the eye. Arrange a dermatology review when one bump does not settle, keeps returning, or sits on a scar. Recurrent scalp itch, pimples, skin bumps, or ingrown hairs may need a different diagnosis and treatment plan.

Ask whether the bump looks infectious, irritated, or related to an ingrown hair; whether a swab or other test is needed; and how long to pause hair removal. Ask which treatment is suitable and how to prevent recurrence in the same area.
