What should you know about single flat red spot on skin?

A flat spot is a change in colour without a raised bump. Recent product contact may cause contact dermatitis; sweating and heat can cause heat rash; and sun exposure can cause sunburn. Ongoing scale may occur with psoriasis, while facial flushing can occur with rosacea. A warm, tender area that expands can be cellulitis and should not be treated as a cosmetic mark. Colour alone cannot identify the cause.

Take a clear photograph in consistent light and note when the spot appeared, whether it itches or hurts, and what touched the area. Wash gently, avoid rubbing and new fragranced products, and protect the site from further sun. Do not apply strong steroid, acid, or bleaching products without advice. If the spot follows a known irritant, stopping that exposure may help; persistent or recurrent marks deserve an examination before cosmetic treatment such as IPL photofacial is considered.

Arrange a review if the spot persists, grows, becomes scaly, bleeds, changes colour, or keeps returning. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, increasing warmth or pain, pus, fever, red streaks, or feeling unwell. Emergency help is needed for trouble breathing, facial swelling, blistering across a large area, or a severe reaction involving the eyes. These warning signs are based on the pattern and symptoms, not simply on redness.

Ask what diagnoses fit the location and timing, whether the spot needs testing, and which products should be avoided. If it fades, ask how to prevent recurrence and whether any treatment is appropriate after the cause is clear.
