What should you know about silverette mastitis?

Silverette is a type of silver nursing cup worn over the nipple inside a bra. A smooth cup may reduce rubbing and help keep fabric away from cracked skin, but evidence for treating mastitis with silver products is limited. Mastitis commonly involves a tender, warm or swollen area of the breast and may occur with flu-like symptoms. Breast Pain and Painful Breastfeeding can have causes other than mastitis, so the label alone cannot identify the problem.

Continue breastfeeding or expressing according to comfort rather than trying to empty the breast repeatedly. Rest, drink to thirst, use a cold pack wrapped in cloth, and consider pain relief that is compatible with breastfeeding after checking with a pharmacist or clinician. Check the cup instructions, clean it as directed, and stop using it if the skin becomes irritated. Contact a clinician if symptoms are worsening, you feel unwell, or the tender area is not improving with supportive care. Seek urgent assessment for severe illness, rapidly spreading redness, a new fluctuating swelling, or difficulty keeping fluids down. Antibiotics may be needed when bacterial infection is suspected; do not rely on a nursing cup to replace assessment.
