Silver warts: what they may be and how they are treated

Common warts develop a rough, raised surface as skin builds up over the lesion. That surface may appear white, grey, or silvery, especially after soaking or treatment. Tiny dark dots can sometimes be visible within the growth. Warts can spread through direct contact or shared personal items, and picking may move the virus to nearby skin. A changing, bleeding, very dark, or unusually painful growth deserves examination rather than home treatment.

A clinician may recommend observation when the lesion is harmless and not bothersome. If removal is wanted, options can include cryotherapy, electrosurgery, or a planned wart-removal procedure. Imiquimod may be suitable for selected lesions and is used according to a prescribed schedule. Do not cut, burn, or file a growth aggressively, and avoid sharing nail tools, towels, or footwear. Covering a wart during activities that involve close skin contact can reduce spread.

Arrange a skin examination if the growth is changing quickly, bleeding without clear injury, ulcerated, painful, or different from your other warts. Seek advice before self-treatment if it is on the face, genitals, or near a nail, or if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced immunity. Persistent growths may need a different diagnosis or a procedure chosen for that location.

Ask whether the appearance fits a wart, whether treatment is needed, and which option suits its location and thickness. Discuss expected soreness, wound care, the possibility of needing repeat treatment, and how to protect nearby skin.
