Silicone for Burn Scars: What to Know

Silicone gel or a silicone sheet creates a light covering over closed scar tissue. The surface can retain moisture and experience less rubbing, which may make a raised or tight scar feel calmer as it matures. Burn scars vary with depth, location, skin tension, and healing pattern. Silicone will not close a wound, restore lost skin, or correct a scar that is restricting movement on its own.

Wait until the burn has fully closed, then wash and dry the area before application. Follow the product directions and introduce wear gradually if the skin is delicate. Clean reusable sheets as directed and inspect the scar each day. Do not apply over drainage, broken skin, blisters, or signs of infection. If the scar remains thick, tight, or functionally limiting, a clinician may discuss fractional laser treatment, scar revision surgery, or a skin graft when appropriate.

Seek urgent care for a new serious burn, breathing difficulty, extensive blistering, uncontrolled pain, or a wound that is open or worsening. For an established scar, arrange review if it becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, painful, or draining. Also ask for assessment when tightening affects a joint, neck, hand, or another area needed for movement.
