Signs of dengue

Dengue is transmitted by mosquitoes and may begin with a sudden fever and general illness. Headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle aches, and joint pain are common ways the illness can feel. Chills, reduced appetite, nausea, or a skin rash may also occur. Easy bruising or other bleeding should be taken seriously.

No single symptom proves dengue. A clinician considers the pattern, recent travel or mosquito exposure, other illnesses in the area, and whether a blood test is useful at that stage.

Drink fluids regularly, rest, and keep a note of your temperature and changes in symptoms. Contact a GP for an assessment if fever persists, symptoms are significant, or dengue is possible after travel or mosquito exposure.

Do not start aspirin or ibuprofen without professional advice when dengue is being considered. Ask a pharmacist or doctor which option is appropriate for fever or pain. Use mosquito protection during the illness to reduce the chance of mosquitoes carrying the virus to others.

Get urgent help for severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding, black stools, blood in vomit, unusual sleepiness, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, cold skin, or reduced urination. A person who cannot drink enough or is deteriorating quickly should be assessed without delay.

Ask how dengue will be checked, whether you need repeat testing, how much fluid is suitable for you, which medicines to avoid, and exactly which symptoms mean you should go to an emergency department.
