What should you know about sigmoid diverticulosis?

The sigmoid colon is the lower section of the large bowel. Diverticulosis describes pouches in its wall and is different from diverticulitis, where a pouch becomes inflamed. Many people have diverticulosis without noticeable symptoms. Others report bloating, changes in stool frequency or discomfort. Abdominal pain can have many causes, so a symptom alone cannot identify diverticulosis or predict inflammation.

Aim for regular bowel movements with a varied diet containing fibre, and increase fibre slowly if your clinician agrees. Drink fluids regularly and stay physically active within your ability. If constipation, bloating or pain persists, record the pattern, food triggers and medicines before a GP Consultation. Do not start laxatives or supplements simply because pouches were seen; suitability depends on your health and other medicines.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or steadily worsening abdominal pain, fever with feeling very unwell, persistent vomiting, a swollen abdomen, inability to pass stool or gas, faintness, or blood in the stool. These symptoms may indicate inflammation, bleeding or blockage and need assessment. Contact a clinician if new abdominal pain or a sustained bowel change develops, even when a previous scan showed diverticulosis.
