Shoulder freckles from sun: what to know

Freckles, also called ephelides, often appear on skin that receives repeated sunlight. They may become darker during sunnier months and less noticeable when ultraviolet exposure falls. A cluster of similar, evenly coloured spots is often different from a single mark that changes on its own. Freckles do not provide protection from ultraviolet radiation, so surrounding skin can still burn and accumulate sun damage.

A new or changing pigmented mark should not be labelled a freckle from a description alone. Notice whether one spot develops an irregular outline, several colours, marked growth, bleeding, crusting, or persistent itching. A clinician can examine it more closely, sometimes with magnification.

Cover the shoulders with closely woven clothing when practical, seek shade, and use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin as directed on its label. Reapply after swimming, sweating, or towel drying. Avoid deliberate tanning, and do not pick or scrub pigmented spots.
