Shots for a cough

Cough is a protective reflex that clears mucus or irritants. Common cold, allergic rhinitis, acid reflux, and acute bronchitis can all cause coughing, but they need different approaches. Asthma may cause cough as its main breathing symptom. Bronchiectasis can produce repeated cough with mucus, while bronchiolitis is mainly a concern in young children. An injection cannot be chosen safely from the cough alone, and antibiotics do not help every infection.

Tell a clinician how long you have been coughing, whether mucus is present, and whether you have fever, breathlessness, chest pain, reflux, allergy symptoms, or recent exposure to illness. Rest, drink fluids if suitable for you, avoid smoke, and follow advice for any prescribed inhaler or medicine. Ask what an injection is intended to treat, how it works, and what side effects or alternatives apply before accepting one.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, fainting, or coughing blood. Arrange prompt medical review for chest pain, dehydration, a high or persistent fever, a cough that is worsening, or a child who is breathing unusually fast or struggling to feed. A cough that persists or repeatedly returns also deserves assessment, especially with weight loss, night sweats, or wheezing.

Ask which cause is suspected, whether an injection changes the course of that cause, and what oral or inhaled options could work instead. Check when to return if the cough does not improve.
