What should you know about shivering during periods?

Menstrual cramps, stress, poor sleep, and changes in how the body senses temperature can make some people feel cold or shaky around bleeding. Shivering may also occur alongside nausea, diarrhoea, headache, or fatigue. A period does not protect you from unrelated illness: influenza, pneumonia, kidney infection, urinary tract infection, dengue fever, and malaria can cause chills with other symptoms. If you have a measured fever, worsening pain, burning urination, cough, rash, vomiting, or recent travel, consider a cause beyond menstruation. Severe bleeding can also leave you weak or light-headed and needs review.

Rest, drink fluids, eat if able, and use comfortable layers or a warm compress for cramps. Track the first day of bleeding, pain severity, temperature, bleeding pattern, and any medicines taken. Use pain relief only if it is suitable for you and follow the label; ask a pharmacist if you have stomach, kidney, bleeding, pregnancy, or medicine concerns. Arrange a review if shivering repeats across cycles, cramps are worsening, or bleeding is much heavier or longer than usual.

Seek urgent help for fainting, confusion, severe weakness, severe pelvic pain, trouble breathing, or soaking through menstrual protection repeatedly with dizziness. Get same-day advice for fever with shaking chills, a new rash, persistent vomiting, painful urination, or severe back pain. If pregnancy is possible and you have pain or bleeding, seek prompt medical care.
