What should you know about shiny burn scar?

Burn healing can replace normal skin with scar tissue that has a different surface, colour, thickness, and ability to stretch. A smooth or glossy surface may catch the light, especially when the scar is raised, flat, pale, darker than nearby skin, or formed over a broad area. Tightness, itch, tenderness, dryness, or reduced movement can occur when the scar crosses a joint or lies on skin that moves often.

The look alone cannot show whether a scar is shallow or deep. A clinician may examine its texture, flexibility, sensation, and effect on movement. Changes can continue as the scar matures, so a recent scar may not resemble its later appearance.

Use the moisturising and scar-care plan given by your treating team, and protect the area from sun because healed scar tissue can darken or burn more easily. Do not pick, scrub, or apply strong lightening products without advice. If the scar feels tight, supervised stretching or therapy may protect movement. Once the skin is fully closed, a dermatologist or burn specialist can discuss options such as fractional laser treatment, scar revision surgery, or a skin graft when the scar causes functional or cosmetic concern.

Arrange an assessment if the scar becomes increasingly painful, itchy, thick, tight, or difficult to move, or if it repeatedly cracks. Seek prompt medical care for new drainage, spreading redness, warmth, fever, bleeding, or an open area that is not healing. A rapidly changing lump within a long-standing scar also deserves examination.

Ask whether the scar is fully mature, whether its tightness affects nearby movement, and which moisturiser, dressing, massage, or therapy is suitable for its current stage. You can also ask what improvement is realistic from laser treatment or surgery, how many sessions or procedures may be needed, and how skin tone and graft or incision healing will be considered.
