What should you know about sharp pain in left breast?

Breast pain may be linked to hormonal changes, a strained chest muscle, pressure from clothing, a minor injury, nerve irritation, or inflammation. Infection can cause a painful warm area with redness, swelling, or fever; an abscess may need drainage. Pain that changes with movement or pressing the ribs may come from the chest wall rather than breast tissue. A new lump, skin change, nipple inversion, or bloody discharge needs clinical review. Pain alone does not establish a diagnosis.

Note when the pain began, whether it follows your cycle, and whether movement, touch, or breathing changes it. Check both breasts gently for a new lump, warmth, redness, skin dimpling, or nipple discharge without repeatedly pressing the sore area. A well-fitting supportive bra and avoiding activities that strain the chest may help. Arrange assessment for persistent, focal, or recurring pain, or any new breast change.

Seek urgent care for breast redness with fever, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain after an injury, or chest pain with breathlessness, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Prompt breast review is appropriate for a new fixed lump, bloody discharge, nipple inversion, or skin dimpling.
