What should you know about sharp pain during sexually active female?

Pain as penetration begins can relate to dryness, contact irritation, a fissure, pelvic-floor tightening, vulvodynia, or lichen sclerosus. Pain with deeper penetration may occur with endometriosis, an ovarian endometrioma, or pelvic inflammatory disease. Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause may cause dryness and burning when oestrogen levels change. The symptom alone cannot confirm a condition. Tell the clinician whether it is new, linked to the menstrual cycle, limited to one side, or followed by bleeding or discharge.

Pause penetration if the pain is sharp. Use communication, a slower pace, adequate arousal, and a lubricant without fragrance or warming ingredients if friction seems involved. Do not douche or use products that irritate the area. Keep a brief symptom diary and include contraception, pregnancy possibility, recent procedures, urinary symptoms, and discharge. A gynaecology appointment is appropriate when pain recurs, interferes with sex, or does not settle.

Get urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, fever, vomiting, or pain when pregnancy is possible. Seek prompt review for new sores, significant swelling, or foul-smelling discharge. These warning features need assessment for infection, bleeding, or another acute pelvic problem.
