Small adhesive electrodes placed on the skin detect electrical activity and produce a tracing. Clinicians may use it to assess rhythm, rate, and patterns that can occur with reduced blood flow, inflammation, or other heart conditions. A normal tracing does not explain every symptom, and a device reading is not a substitute for a clinical assessment. Promotional demonstrations, including those associated with television products, should not be treated as medical validation.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest, arms, and legs, and tell the clinician about medicines, implanted devices, or symptoms. Remain still and breathe normally while the recording is made; movement, shivering, or loose electrodes can affect the tracing. Ask who will review the result and what follow-up is planned if it is unclear or abnormal.

Do not wait for an ECG appointment if chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, sudden sweating, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back starts suddenly. Seek emergency care immediately. An ECG can be one part of urgent assessment, alongside examination and other tests chosen by the medical team.

Ask what question the ECG is intended to answer, whether you need a resting or longer recording, and when results will be explained. Ask what symptoms should prompt urgent help even if a previous tracing was reassuring.
