What should you know about high SGPT in dengue?

Short answer
High SGPT during dengue can reflect liver irritation from the infection, so clinicians interpret it with symptoms, other tests and the illness stage.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- SGPT is also called
- ALT

- Liver irritation during dengue
- Follow-up
- Clinical review and repeat testing when advised
Why SGPT can rise
SGPT, also called ALT, is an enzyme associated mainly with liver cells. Dengue may cause temporary liver inflammation, and this can increase SGPT. The result does not by itself show how severe the illness is or predict what will happen. Clinicians also consider hydration, platelet and other blood results, abdominal findings, bleeding symptoms and whether fever is changing.
Some medicines and existing liver conditions can affect the interpretation. Tell the treating team about all medicines, supplements and recent alcohol use. Do not assume that a falling fever means every risk has passed; medical review may remain important as the illness evolves.
Care while being monitored
Follow the fluid and rest advice given by your clinician, and attend requested repeat blood tests. Use only fever or pain medicines specifically approved for you; ask before taking aspirin, ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory medicines because bleeding risk can matter in dengue. Keep a record of drinking, urine output, fever and new symptoms.
Avoid alcohol and strenuous activity until a clinician says recovery is adequate. A GP consultation can help review the SGPT trend, medicines and warning signs when hospital care is not already arranged.
Warning signs
Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, easy bruising, extreme sleepiness, confusion, breathing difficulty, cold clammy skin or very little urine. Do not wait for the next appointment when these symptoms appear.
Questions for your care team
Ask what your SGPT trend means with the other blood results, when testing should be repeated, which pain medicines are suitable, how much fluid is appropriate for you, and which warning signs require emergency assessment.

Questions people ask
Does high SGPT prove that dengue is severe?
No. SGPT is only one part of the assessment; symptoms, examination and other results guide decisions.
Can I take ibuprofen for dengue pain?
Ask a clinician first. Anti-inflammatory medicines may be unsuitable when dengue-related bleeding risk is a concern.
