Sex after your period causing bleeding

Light blood may be leftover menstrual flow or a small surface injury caused by friction, dryness, or vigorous sex. Bleeding can also occur when the cervix is inflamed, including with Chlamydia, or when cervical cells have changed, such as with Cervical Dysplasia. A less common cause is cancer of the cervix or vagina; bleeding after sex is a presentation of these conditions, not proof that you have them. Note the colour, amount, timing, pain, discharge, odour, and whether the bleeding happens away from your period.

Pause penetrative sex if it causes pain or bleeding, and use a lubricant when you resume if dryness may be contributing. Track episodes against your cycle and arrange a gynaecology or primary-care visit if the bleeding recurs, occurs after menopause, or comes with unusual discharge or pelvic pain. The clinician may examine the vagina and cervix, offer infection testing, and check whether cervical screening is due. Do not delay care simply because the bleeding is light.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy or rapidly increasing bleeding, faintness, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fever, or a possible pregnancy with pain or bleeding. Arrange prompt assessment for bleeding after sex that keeps returning, occurs after menopause, or follows a new sexual partner. A clinician can distinguish a surface cause from a problem needing treatment.

Ask whether the bleeding pattern suggests irritation, infection, or a cervical cause; whether you need an examination or Chlamydia test; and which symptoms should prompt urgent help. If an abnormal cervical area is found, ask whether Cervical Dysplasia or a Cone Biopsy is relevant to your care.
