Severe Post-Inflammatory Erythema: What to Know

How the structures involved in Post-Inflammatory Erythema differ from normal

Short answer

Severe post-inflammatory erythema is persistent red or pink discolouration after skin inflammation, often acne, and treatment should begin only after active causes are controlled.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Appearance
Flat red, pink or purplish marks
Common trigger
Previously inflamed acne or irritated skin
Skin protection
Gentle care and daily sun protection

What it means

Inflammation can leave superficial blood vessels more visible, producing flat red, pink or purplish marks where spots, irritation or injury healed. The colour may look stronger after heat, exercise or a hot shower. It is different from a depressed or raised scar, although both can occur after Acne.

New redness, tenderness, warmth, crusting or pus suggests ongoing inflammation rather than a settled mark. A clinician can check whether acne or another trigger is still active and whether the colour is erythema, pigmentation or a combination.

What to do now

Use a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and broad-spectrum sun protection, and avoid picking, scrubbing or introducing several irritating products at once. Treating active acne helps reduce fresh inflammation. A dermatologist may discuss IPL Photofacial or Pulsed Dye Laser Treatment after examining skin tone, the mark pattern and sensitivity.

Energy-based treatment can temporarily irritate skin and may not suit every person. A planned test area, careful settings and aftercare are useful topics for consultation.

When to seek care

Book a dermatology assessment when redness is extensive, worsening, painful, itchy, warm, or accompanied by new breakouts. Seek prompt care for swelling around the eye, rapidly spreading redness, blisters, fever or pus. Review is also sensible when the colour change affects confidence or has not settled as expected, because treatment depends on the underlying trigger.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the marks are erythema, pigmentation or scarring; whether active acne needs treatment first; which procedure suits your skin; and what downtime and flare signs to expect.

Questions people ask

Is post-inflammatory erythema the same as a scar?

It is a colour change after inflammation. Texture changes such as indentations or raised tissue may represent scarring and should be assessed separately.

Can laser treatment remove the red marks immediately?

Treatment response varies, and the skin may need a planned course with recovery between sessions; a dermatologist should assess suitability first.
