Severe GERD in pregnancy: what to know

Short answer
Severe GERD in pregnancy can cause persistent burning, regurgitation, cough, or sleep disruption and should be assessed when symptoms are difficult to control.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Burning or sour fluid rising after meals or when lying down

- Hormonal relaxation and pressure on the stomach can worsen reflux

- Chest pain, breathing trouble, blood in vomit, black stools, or severe pain
What it can mean
Pregnancy hormones can relax the muscle between the food pipe and stomach, while the growing uterus can increase pressure on the stomach. Acid may then move upwards, causing a sour taste, burning behind the breastbone, throat irritation, or repeated coughing. Reflux symptoms can be worse after large meals, bending, or lying down. Hiatus hernia may also contribute; see [Hiatus Hernia](/conditions/hiatus-hernia/).
What you can do
Try smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and avoid lying down soon after food. Notice whether rich, spicy, acidic, or late meals trigger symptoms. Raising the head of the bed can reduce night-time backflow. Drink fluids regularly and ask a clinician or pharmacist which antacid or reflux medicine is suitable in pregnancy; do not start or stop medicines without checking. Persistent symptoms can disturb sleep and may be associated with [Difficulty Sleeping](/symptoms/difficulty-sleeping/).
When to seek care
Arrange medical advice if symptoms are frequent, severe, affecting eating or sleep, or not improving with simple measures. Seek urgent help for chest pain or tightness, trouble breathing, vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or difficulty swallowing. Chest symptoms should not be assumed to be reflux; review [Chest Tightness](/symptoms/chest-tightness/) if relevant.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your pattern fits reflux, which medicines are compatible with your pregnancy, and whether another cause such as [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/) or [Chronic Cough](/conditions/chronic-cough/) needs assessment. Mention your pregnancy stage, triggers, medicines, swallowing symptoms, and any weight or appetite change.

Questions people ask
Can severe reflux harm the baby?
Symptoms usually affect the pregnant person, but severe or persistent reflux still deserves assessment because poor intake, repeated vomiting, or medicine needs may require treatment.
Can pregnancy reflux cause a cough?
Yes. Reflux reaching the throat can irritate it and trigger coughing, especially after meals or at night.
