Severe Body Aches and Flu: What to Know

Flu often starts abruptly with aches, chills, headache, pronounced tiredness, cough, or sore throat. COVID-19 can look similar, so symptoms alone cannot always distinguish them. Malaria deserves prompt consideration after travel to a risk area, especially with recurring fever or chills. Dengue fever may cause intense muscle and joint pain. Brucellosis can follow particular animal or dairy exposures. Aches that continue after the acute illness may need evaluation for Long COVID, fibromyalgia, or hypothyroidism rather than being assumed to be ongoing flu.

Rest, drink enough to pass urine regularly, and use light clothing and bedding if fever makes you hot. A pharmacist can help you choose an appropriate pain or fever medicine, particularly if you have a long-term condition or take regular treatment. Avoid doubling ingredients found in combination cold remedies. Limit close contact while acutely unwell and improve ventilation around others. Ask a clinician promptly whether an antiviral assessment is appropriate if you are at higher risk of complications or became ill recently.

Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, chest pressure, confusion, collapse, a seizure, or severe dehydration. Prompt medical review is also needed for worsening weakness, a new rash or bleeding, severe muscle pain with very dark urine, or fever after travel. If symptoms are not improving or return after initial improvement, arrange an assessment.
