Severe body aches

Aches can affect muscles throughout the body or concentrate in particular areas. Influenza and COVID-19 commonly present with sudden aches alongside fever, chills, cough, sore throat, or tiredness. Malaria, dengue fever, and brucellosis are important possibilities after relevant travel, insect exposure, animal contact, or unpasteurised dairy exposure and need clinical evaluation. Ongoing widespread pain may occur with fibromyalgia. Slower movement, cold intolerance, dry skin, or tiredness can occur with hypothyroidism. Aches after an infection may continue as part of Long COVID. These patterns overlap, so symptoms alone cannot confirm a cause.

Rest, drink fluids, and use gentle movement if it does not increase pain. Check your temperature and record when the aches began, where they are, and any new medicines. Use only pain relief that is suitable for you and follow the label; ask a pharmacist if you have kidney disease, stomach ulcers, liver disease, are pregnant, or take blood thinners. Avoid strenuous exercise while feverish or acutely unwell.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, a stiff neck with severe headache, a widespread purple or non-blanching rash, severe weakness, dehydration, or very dark urine. Get prompt medical advice for high fever, worsening pain, recent travel to a malaria area, or a tick or animal exposure. Persistent aches without a clear recovery pattern also need review.

Tell your clinician about fever, travel, insect bites, animal contact, recent infections, new medicines, and other symptoms. Ask whether examination or blood tests are needed and how to manage activity while the cause is being assessed.
