Severe acidity during pregnancy: what to know

How the structures involved in Acid Reflux differ from normal

Short answer

Severe acidity during pregnancy is often caused by reflux as hormones relax the food-pipe valve and the growing uterus increases pressure on the stomach.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common pattern
Burning or sour fluid after meals or when lying down
First step
Use smaller meals and stay upright after eating
Medication
Check suitability with a maternity clinician or pharmacist

What it can mean

Burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, frequent belching or fluid coming up after meals can fit acid reflux. Symptoms may be worse after a large meal, when bending, or when lying down. Pregnancy-related reflux does not harm the baby in itself, but persistent symptoms can disturb eating and sleep. Chest tightness or abdominal pain should not automatically be attributed to acidity.

Steps that may help

Try smaller meals, eat slowly, and remain upright after eating. Avoid lying down soon after food; raising the upper body during rest may help night symptoms. Notice whether spicy, fatty or acidic foods, caffeine, or late meals trigger discomfort, and reduce individual triggers without cutting out nutritious foods. Ask your maternity clinician or pharmacist before using an antacid or other reflux medicine, because pregnancy changes which products are suitable.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice if symptoms are severe, frequent, worsening, or making it difficult to eat or sleep. Seek urgent care for crushing or persistent chest pain, breathlessness, faintness, vomiting blood, black stools, repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or trouble swallowing. A clinician can separate reflux from other causes and check for dehydration or pregnancy-related concerns.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which pregnancy-safe treatment is appropriate, how long to try lifestyle measures, and whether your symptoms need assessment for another condition. Take a short record of meals, timing, night waking, vomiting and any medicines or supplements.
