What should you know about septic bursitis hip?

A bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion that reduces friction near a joint. When germs enter it through nearby skin, a wound, a procedure, or spread from another site, the bursa may become infected. Hip pain can also come from the joint, bone, muscle, or skin, so examination is needed rather than relying on location alone.

A clinician may look for tenderness, warmth, skin changes, fever, and limits in movement. Testing fluid from the swollen area may help distinguish infection from non-infectious inflammation.

Arrange prompt medical review if infection is suspected. Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or massaging a swollen tender spot, and do not self-start leftover antibiotics. Treatment may include prescribed antibiotics, drainage or aspiration of infected fluid, and later rehabilitation when pain and infection are controlled. Anti-inflammatory medicines or injections are not automatically appropriate when infection has not been excluded.

Seek urgent care for fever with worsening hip pain, rapidly spreading redness, pus, chills, marked weakness, confusion, or inability to bear weight. People with diabetes, reduced immunity, recent surgery, or an artificial joint should contact a clinician promptly when new warmth, swelling, or pain appears. Emergency help is needed for confusion, fainting, or severe breathing difficulty.

Ask whether the symptoms point to a bursa or the hip joint, whether fluid should be tested, which antibiotic plan is needed, and when movement or physiotherapy can safely restart. Ask how to protect the skin and what change should trigger reassessment.
