What should you know about sentinel biopsy?

Before surgery, the team may use a tracer to identify the drainage pathway from the tumour area. During the procedure, the surgeon removes the identified sentinel node or nodes for laboratory examination. A pathologist checks the tissue for cancer cells, sometimes using immunohistochemistry to detect particular cell features.

The result can add information to scans and the main tumour biopsy. A negative result may support a more limited lymph-node operation, while detected cancer cells may lead to further staging or treatment planning. The meaning depends on the cancer type, the sampled area, and the rest of your pathology report.

Follow the hospital instructions about fasting, medicines, allergies, and transport home. Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, pregnancy, previous reactions to dyes, and any arm or leg swelling. Afterward, keep the wound clean and follow advice about dressings, movement, and pain relief. Bruising, tenderness, or temporary numbness can occur near the sampling site.

Contact your surgical team promptly if the wound becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, or painful, or if fluid or blood continues to seep through the dressing. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, trouble breathing, facial swelling, fainting, or a rapidly worsening allergic reaction. New or persistent swelling in the nearby arm or leg also deserves clinical review.

Ask which node is being sampled, whether a tracer or dye will be used, what anaesthetic is planned, and when normal activities can resume. Clarify what a negative or positive result could mean for imaging, surgery, genomic tumour profiling, or systemic treatment.
