What should you know about semitendinosus bursitis?

Short answer
Semitendinosus bursitis is irritation of a fluid-filled sac near the inner back of the knee that can cause local pain and swelling.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is happening
A bursa cushions movement between soft tissues and nearby structures. Repeated kneeling, running, friction, altered walking, or a nearby tendon problem can irritate it. Pain is often focused near the inner knee or lower back of the thigh and may worsen with bending, stairs, or pressure. Swelling can be subtle, and similar symptoms can come from tendon, joint, or nerve problems, so location and examination matter. A clinician may assess movement and consider imaging if the diagnosis is unclear.
Ways to settle irritation
Reduce the activity that repeatedly compresses or rubs the area, while keeping gentle movement within comfort. A cold pack wrapped in fabric may help for short periods. Footwear, training volume, hip and knee strength, and movement technique may need review. A clinician may discuss anti-inflammatory medication when suitable for you. Persistent swelling or fluid may lead to consideration of aspiration; an injection is a separate decision based on the diagnosis and surrounding structures.
When to be assessed
Arrange prompt medical assessment for increasing warmth, redness, marked swelling, fever, or feeling unwell, because infection needs different treatment. Seek urgent help for sudden inability to bear weight, severe injury, rapidly enlarging swelling, or a cold or numb foot. If symptoms persist despite reducing aggravating activity, assessment can distinguish bursal irritation from a tendon or joint condition.
Questions to bring
Ask which structure is inflamed, whether fluid is present, and whether an infection or joint problem needs exclusion. Discuss safe activity, medication interactions, the role of physiotherapy, and when aspiration or injection would be considered.

Questions people ask
Is every lump near the knee bursitis?
No. A lump may reflect a bursa, tendon, joint fluid, or another cause, so a new or persistent swelling should be examined.
Can I keep exercising?
Choose low-irritation movement that does not increase pain or swelling, and pause activities that repeatedly compress the tender area.
