Selsun Blue for white spots: what to know

Light or white patches can look similar while having different causes. A superficial yeast-related rash may produce fine scale, often on the trunk, while inflammation, irritation, acne-related changes, or conditions such as folliculitis can alter skin colour. Rosacea and perioral dermatitis can also create confusing facial changes, but they are not treated by assuming every pale area is fungal. Selsun Blue cannot confirm the cause, and it may irritate facial or already inflamed skin.

Do not scrub the patches or apply Selsun Blue to the face, genitals, broken skin, or near the eyes unless a clinician has given clear instructions. Photograph the areas in consistent light and note whether they are scaly, itchy, spreading, or linked to a new product. A clinician may examine the scale and distribution and choose treatment accordingly. Avoid starting several acne, bleaching, or antifungal products at once because irritation can obscure the original pattern.

Arrange a skin assessment if patches spread, recur, itch, scale, or remain unexplained. Seek prompt care for pain, blisters, rapidly changing colour, pus, fever, or involvement of the eyes or mouth. Sudden widespread pigment change also deserves medical review rather than repeated home treatment.
