What should you know about being seizure free?

The phrase describes what has happened, not a guarantee about what will happen next. The period should be counted using the date of the last confirmed seizure and should include any episodes that happened during sleep or were only recognised later. Brief staring, unusual sensations or unexplained gaps in memory may be relevant even when there was no dramatic shaking. A clinician may consider the seizure type, examination, test results, medicine history and possible causes when deciding what the period means for you.

Take prescribed medicine on the agreed schedule and ask what to do after a missed dose. Keep sleep regular, avoid known personal triggers and record any unusual event rather than dismissing it. Do not stop treatment suddenly or change the dose because you feel well. Keep follow-up appointments, review safety around driving, swimming, heights and machinery, and tell your clinician about pregnancy plans or new medicines. A seizure-free period can support a treatment discussion, but it does not by itself decide whether medicine should change.

Seek emergency help for a prolonged seizure, repeated seizures without recovery, breathing difficulty, serious injury or a first seizure after a long quiet period. Get urgent assessment for fever with severe headache, stiff neck, new weakness or persistent confusion. Meningitis can present with fever, headache and neck stiffness. Low blood sugar may trigger seizure-like symptoms, particularly in someone using diabetes medicine; Hypoglycaemia needs prompt treatment. Alcohol withdrawal can also be dangerous, so mention heavy alcohol use or a recent change to Alcohol Use Disorder treatment.
