Sebaceous Hyperplasia Under the Eye

Sebaceous hyperplasia may appear as a tiny pale or yellowish facial papule, sometimes with a central dip. Under-eye bumps can instead be milia, blocked glands, cysts or other lesions, and their management differs. The thin eyelid area also has less tolerance for heat, acids, squeezing and friction.

Cleanse gently, keep nails and cosmetics from rubbing the area, and use products intended for the periocular region. Do not pierce, squeeze, freeze or apply strong acne treatments close to the eye. If removal is wanted, a qualified dermatologist should choose the method and protect the eye. Electrosurgery or CO2 laser resurfacing may be discussed only when appropriate for the exact site and depth.

Arrange prompt assessment for a bump that grows quickly, bleeds, ulcerates, becomes painful or changes colour. Seek urgent medical help for eye pain, vision change, marked swelling or redness spreading beyond the lesion. A cosmetic concern still deserves diagnosis before treatment.
