Sebaceous cyst treatment: options and timing

An examination considers the lump's size, tenderness, redness, drainage, mobility, and history of recurrence. A calm cyst may need no immediate procedure if it is not troubling you. Inflammation can make complete removal less suitable at that visit because the surrounding tissue is irritated. An abscess is a different problem and may need drainage. The term sebaceous cyst is often used for an epidermoid cyst, but other lumps can look similar.

Do not squeeze or puncture the lump before an appointment. For selected inflamed cysts, a clinician may offer an intralesional steroid injection to reduce inflammation. If pus has collected, abscess drainage may be considered. Once inflammation has settled, cyst removal can take out the sac and its wall, which helps address a recurring lump. Your clinician will explain wound care, possible scarring, and whether a specimen should be examined.

Get prompt medical advice for worsening pain, heat, spreading redness, marked swelling, pus-like fluid, fever, or rapid enlargement. A lump that is firm, fixed, bleeding, or not behaving like a typical cyst also needs assessment. Urgency is guided by these changes, not by the fact that a lump is common.
