Sebaceous cyst sites: where they can appear

A cyst may sit just beneath the skin and feel like a rounded, discrete lump. On the scalp it can catch during brushing; on the face or neck it may be more noticeable; on the back or waist it may rub against clothing. A lump near an eye, nose, ear, or genital skin deserves careful assessment because nearby structures and skin thickness influence the safest approach. A lump in the armpit or groin can also have other causes.

Avoid squeezing any cyst, wherever it appears. Reduce rubbing with breathable clothing and gentle cleansing. Do not pierce a scalp or facial lump yourself, and keep products away from an irritated area near the eyes. A clinician can distinguish a cyst from another skin lump and discuss options such as an injection for inflammation, drainage when infection is suspected, or removal of the cyst and its wall when appropriate.

Seek prompt review if the lump becomes hot, increasingly painful, red, swollen, or begins draining. Fever or redness spreading beyond the lump also warrants prompt care. Arrange an examination for a firm, fixed, quickly enlarging, or uncertain lump, even if it is not painful. Site alone cannot establish the diagnosis.
