Sebaceous cyst on the earlobe: what to know

A cyst is a sac beneath the skin that can collect keratin. On an earlobe it may appear as a round, skin-coloured bump and sometimes has a small central opening. It can be painless until friction, jewellery or inflammation irritates it. Similar-looking lumps include a piercing-related scar, an inflamed follicle or an abscess, so appearance alone is not enough for diagnosis.

Do not squeeze, cut or insert a needle into the earlobe. Keep jewellery from pressing on the lump, wash gently, and avoid rubbing headphones or helmets against it. A warm compress may ease mild tenderness, but it will not reliably remove the cyst wall.
