Sebaceous cyst on the clitoris: what to know

The term sebaceous cyst is commonly used for an epidermoid cyst: a small sac under the skin containing keratin. Around the clitoris or vulva, a lump can also have other causes, including an irritated hair follicle, abscess or another vulval lesion. A clinician can assess its surface, depth, tenderness and whether it is inflamed. A cyst may feel smooth and mobile, but that finding alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Friction, shaving, tight clothing or pressure can make a sensitive area more uncomfortable. Do not assume that a clitoral lump is caused by an infection or cancer; examination is the safer way to separate these possibilities.

Keep the area gently clean and dry, wear loose breathable underwear, and avoid squeezing, piercing or trying to drain the lump. Pause shaving and activities that rub the area if they increase discomfort. A warm, not hot, compress may soothe tenderness, but stop if the skin becomes more irritated.

If the lump is small and not painful, a clinician may recommend observation. Persistent, recurrent or bothersome cysts may be treated with a procedure that removes the cyst wall; simple drainage alone can allow it to return. Arrange prompt medical assessment if the lump becomes rapidly more swollen, hot, red or painful, or if pus, fever or spreading redness develops.
