Why a Sebaceous Cyst Keeps Coming Back

A sebaceous cyst usually refers to an epidermoid cyst, a sac lined by cells that produce keratin. If the sac is only opened or its contents are released, the lining can remain and refill. Friction, pressure, shaving, or inflammation around the site may also make the area swell again. A recurring lump is not automatically dangerous, but repeated episodes are a reason to confirm that the diagnosis is correct.

A clinician will want to know whether the same spot returns, whether it drains, and whether the lump becomes painful or red. Review is especially useful if the original treatment was drainage alone.
