Sebaceous Cyst on the Eyebrow: What to Know

The term sebaceous cyst commonly refers to an epidermoid cyst: a sac beneath the skin containing keratin. It may feel smooth, round, and mobile, and sometimes has a tiny central opening. Its position beside the eyebrow can make it noticeable or uncomfortable when you wash your face, wear glasses, or touch the area. A lump alone cannot confirm the diagnosis; other skin lumps can look similar.

Inflammation can make the cyst suddenly larger, warmer, redder, or painful. That change can reflect irritation or infection rather than proof that the lump is dangerous. Do not squeeze it, pierce it, or try to empty it near the eye.

Keep the area clean and avoid rubbing, eyebrow waxing, or picking over the lump. A warm, clean compress may ease tenderness, but it will not remove the cyst wall. A clinician can examine the lump and discuss observation, a steroid injection into the skin for selected inflammation, drainage when infection has collected, or cyst removal when recurrence or repeated irritation is a concern.

Arrange prompt medical review if the eyebrow becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, or painful, or if the lump leaks pus or blood. Seek urgent help for swelling around the eye, trouble opening the eye, vision changes, fever, or rapidly spreading redness. A skin-lump assessment can help distinguish a cyst from another cause.
