Sebaceous Cyst Common Sites: What to Know

Sebaceous cysts commonly appear on the face, neck, scalp, back, and trunk, but a cyst can develop anywhere with a blocked hair follicle. They often feel like a smooth, rounded lump beneath the skin. Some have a small central opening and may release thick, unpleasant-smelling material if they drain. The label “sebaceous cyst” is commonly used for an epidermoid cyst, although true cysts arising from sebaceous glands are less common.

A cyst on the scalp may catch on a comb or become noticeable during washing. On the face or neck, its visibility may be the main concern. Cysts on the back or trunk can rub against clothing or become tender after pressure. Location alone does not confirm that a lump is a cyst: swollen lymph nodes, lipomas, abscesses, and other skin growths can look or feel similar. Redness, warmth, increasing tenderness, swelling, or drainage can indicate inflammation or infection around the cyst.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly press the lump. These actions can irritate the surrounding skin, push material deeper, and make inflammation more likely. Keep the area clean and avoid friction from tight clothing, straps, or frequent picking. If the lump is quiet and not troublesome, a clinician may discuss observation. If it is inflamed, treatment may include an injection into the skin or drainage, depending on the examination. Removing the cyst wall may be considered when the cyst keeps returning or causes ongoing discomfort; cyst removal is a minor surgical treatment that should be discussed with a qualified clinician.

Arrange a clinical assessment if a lump is new, growing, painful, repeatedly draining, or interfering with movement, sleep, grooming, or clothing. Seek prompt care if redness or swelling is spreading, the area feels hot, pain is rapidly worsening, or you feel generally unwell. A very tender, tense lump may need assessment for an abscess rather than a simple cyst; do not attempt to drain it yourself.

Ask whether the lump has features of a cyst or another skin condition, whether inflammation is present, and whether observation, a steroid injection into the skin, drainage, or cyst removal best fits its current state.
