What should you know about sebaceous cyst armpit removal?

A so-called sebaceous cyst is often an epidermoid cyst: a sac under the skin that contains keratin. In the armpit, friction, shaving, sweat, and nearby hair follicles can make a lump sore or inflamed. An abscess, an inflamed follicle, or an enlarged lymph node can feel similar, so location and feel do not establish the diagnosis.

Do not squeeze or puncture an armpit lump. A calm cyst may be observed or removed with its capsule through a planned procedure. An inflamed collection may need drainage, while an injection may sometimes be considered for selected inflammation. These approaches are not interchangeable, and a clinician chooses after checking the skin, tenderness, drainage, and recurrence pattern.

Arrange prompt review for a lump that enlarges, becomes hot or red, drains, restricts arm movement, or keeps returning. Seek urgent assessment for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, red streaking, or feeling faint or unwell. A firm lump that persists without signs of a skin cyst also needs clinical evaluation.

Ask whether the lump is most consistent with a cyst, abscess, follicle problem, or lymph node, and whether imaging or sampling is needed. If removal is recommended, ask how the armpit's movement and friction may affect wound care and when to resume shaving or exercise.
